Travel: Oudtshoorn

It’s always great to get away for the weekend to someplace away from the noise and pressures of the city, and it’s even better when it’s a surprise birthday trip.

We recently took a trip to Oudtshoorn for Gerrit’s 30th birthday, where we enjoyed a relaxing few days at the AfriCamps Klein Karoo campsite. While there, we enjoyed watching animals roam around our tent (one afternoon we spotted a deer 10 meters away!), looking at the stars, and in general just soaking in the quiet all around.

The second birthday surprise was a trip to the Cango Caves. The caves were majestic to say the least, and well worth a visit. Scrambling through the Devil’s chimney and Postbox was great fun (though it left a few bruises).

Before heading back we also decided to visit one of the many Ostrich farms in the area, where we got an up-close look at those fascinating birds.

P.S. the Klein Karoo has more water than Cape Town ;-)
